Course Description

Examines the individual, behavioral, social, and cultural factors impacting the health and wellness of men. Provides an overview of health differences between various communities of men. Explores possible root causes of these differences. Discusses health and wellness promotion strategies. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify significant men's health issues in the United States.

  2. Describe how the construct of masculinity promotes and hinders men’s health.

  3. Use health models to examine the behavioral, social, and cultural factors that contribute to or inhibit men's health.

  4. Describe how social determinants of health influence the health of individual men and communities of men.

  5. Explore men's health differences using information from credible research and primary data sources.

Social Inquiry and Analysis

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.

General education philosophy statement

Health Studies General Education courses encourage critical thinking about health, systems that influence individual and community health, and strategies that promote individual, community, and environmental health and well-being. Socially constructed concepts of race and masculinity affect behavioral and social conditions that promote health in some men while simultaneously hinder the health in others. Identity, diversity, and privilege are explicit aspects essential to understand health differences. When credible data and research are used, the myths and realities of these constructs can be better understood for the improved health of all men.

Course Activities and Design

  • Using peer-reviewed research
  • Extrapolating and discussing important facts from research 
  • Accessing primary data sets from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.

Assessment methods may include the following:

  • Written examinations
  • Written assignments
  • Critical analysis of material
  • Course activities and discussion
  • Presentations and/or projects
  • Participation in class activities

  • Explore societal and cultural context for masculinity.
  • Explain cultural, social, and environmental influences and their effect on masculinity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of men’s physical and emotional health conditions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of men’s cardiovascular health and men’s cancers.
  • Describe gender differences in life expectancy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current issues in men’s sexual health.
  • Explore current research in men’s health.
  • Explore health behavior models.
  • Summarize behavioral factors that contribute to or inhibit health.
