Course Description

Introduces the history, mission, scope and context of child welfare services and practice, including the underlying philosophy of the field. Includes a survey of the present conditions, cultural and relationship issues, and outcomes of service delivery in both public and private child welfare settings. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Upon completion of this course, students will be working toward competency in the following Oregon Child Welfare Case Worker Competency area: 

Skill Set 1: Fundamentals of Child Welfare Practice

1.3 Ability to use trauma-informed practices that are inclusive of the child and family’s language, race, and culture. 

1.4 Ability to work collaboratively with community-based partners and Tribes to achieve safety, permanency and well-being for all children and families.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Articulate the history, mission, and scope of child welfare in public and private settings.
  • Identify the diversity of populations served and needs addressed by child welfare practitioners.
  • Identify the attitudes, skills, and knowledge needed in the child welfare field.
