Course Description

Explores values and ethics intrinsic to the human services profession, including standards outlined by the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) and the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE). Covers awareness of personal values, cultural bias, style, and philosophies, including how these personal characteristics affect service delivery. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Prerequisites/concurrent: HUS 131 and HUS 141. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Articulate how personal values, biases, belief systems, philosophies and interpersonal style affect clients.
  • Identify appropriate professional boundaries and strategies for self care.
  • Work with clients and client groups using an understanding of each individual's cultural background and identity and group dynamics.
