Course Description
Covers functional and aesthetic design requirements of interior space planning. Relates aspects of both residential and commercial interior design to needs of individuals and groups. Prerequisites: ID 100, ID 120, ID 125, ID 130, ID 131, ID 230 and (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Use basic principles of spatial layout and furniture planning to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Apply professional design knowledge of building codes, spatial diagramming, sketching, and design programming to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Design for all users using ADA and Universal Design guidelines.
- Demonstrate proficiency in CAD drafting software by creating accurate architectural drawings of design solutions.
Course Activities and Design
This course will be presented by means of lecture, discussion, demonstrations, and field trips.

- Students construct drafted documents throughout the term which require architectural drafting standards and dimensioning with scale integers.
- Drawing types include plan, elevation and axonometric
- Students calculate slopes for ADA compliant access ramps.
Communication
Hours: 15- Use basic principles of spatial layout and furniture planning to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Apply professional design knowledge of building codes, spatial diagramming, sketching and design programming to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Apply an understanding of ADA and Universal Design concepts to design for all users.
- Students are required to communicate their design solutions in casual and formal critiques.
- Visual communication involves architectural drawings, diagrams, and concept development.
- Students must explain verbally their "design/ problem solving" efforts.
Human Relations
Hours: 20- Use basic principles of spatial layout and furniture planning to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Apply professional design knowledge of building codes, spatial diagramming, sketching and design programming to create design solutions that address the needs of the users.
- Apply an understanding of ADA and Universal Design concepts to design for all users.
- Students are required to demonstrate knowledge of user needs and profiles.
- Students study users of all abilities and mobilities and design spaces appropriate to these people (clients).
- Students must comprehend the impact of their design on the health, safety and welfare of the users (clients).
