Course Description

Analyzes and compares ASL and English discourse. Reviews relevant research and introduces the research process. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify cultural expectations for conveying information, opinions, and emotions in ASL and English.

  • Use figurative language, make and understand inferences, and use self-monitoring skills during ASL and English discourse. 

  • Discuss relevant research in ASL and English.

  • Conduct research demonstrating meta-linguistic awareness of personal discourse patterns.

Course Activities and Design

This course will include lectures, student presentations, a research project, and group discussions.

Students will be assessed on assignments, quizzes, discussions, and projects.
