Course Description

Introduces the foundations of the ASL/English interpreting profession. Includes communication processes, cultural considerations, the role and function of the interpreter, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, ethical principles, the history of the profession, and the philosophies and practices of interpretation. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Describe the impact of cultural and linguistic differences on an interpretation.

  • Describe the impact of individual perspectives and experiences on an interpretation.

  • Describe sign language interpreting as a profession in the United States, including the history and credentialing of interpreters.

  • Discuss the various models of interpretation and role metaphors which interpreters use to describe their work and the history of the profession.

  • Explain the roles and dynamics of oppressors, benefactors, advocates, and allies within the context of ASL/English interpretation.

Course Activities and Design

Course activities will consist of lectures and student-led discussions.

Students will be assess through quizzes, exams, and participation in discussions.

Course themes include the role of the interpreter, the dynamics between oppressors and benefactors, models of interpreting, and the impact of the interpreter on an interpretation.
