Course Description

Focuses on simultaneous interpreting in teams for live presenters in class. Applies knowledge of the interpreting process, message analysis, and ethical considerations while interpreting. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Apply professional communication skills and demeanor to interpreting assignments.

  • Apply theoretical knowledge of the role and function of an interpreter to actual interpreter practice.

  • Analyze the interpreting process and set individual goals for improvement.

  • Describe the logistics and process of interpreting in a given environment.

Course Activities and Design

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • Regular supervision sessions with instructor to discuss in class interpretations

  • Interpreting in class for guest speakers

  • Weekly meetings with a tutor to analyze their work

  • Contacting speakers and preparing for assignments

  • Practice working with teams and setting up the position of the interpreters appropriately for the setting

  • Maintain a record of hours spent preparing for assignments, tutoring hours, observation hours, and interpreting hours.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed by interpreting work, completion of community hours, reflections, professionalism, and demeanor. Students must complete 60 hours of class time, assignments, tutoring, and community hours.

  • Continued development of expressive and receptive simultaneous interpreting skills.

  • Practice successful communication between the student interpreter and team, consumer, and presenter.

  • Use of appropriate professional dress and demeanor, interpreting techniques, preparation, processing, clarification techniques, and production of an interpretation.

  • Discussing and analyzing personal skill development 

  • Calculating time spent preparing for, discussing, and performing an interpretation.

  • For each assignment, establish the best location for the interpreters given the number of participants, calculate the best angle necessary for the speaker for advantageous sight-lines.

  • Meet with a tutor/mentor weekly to review interpretation and discuss ways to improve both the listening/comprehending of the source message and the production of the target message.
