Course Description

Focuses on practicing simultaneous interpreting in teams in live settings where no consumer is present. Introduces practices such as invoicing, team agreements, and supervision. Applies knowledge of the interpreting process, message analysis, and ethical considerations while interpreting. Prerequisites: Program admission and department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Apply professional communication skills and demeanor within a post-secondary educational setting.

  • Apply theoretical knowledge of the role and function of an interpreter within a post-secondary setting.

  • Set individual goals for improvement using reflective practices and peer feedback.

  • Discuss the logistics and process of interpreting in a given environment.

  • Record hours related to interpreting and create accurate invoices.

Course Activities and Design

This course will consist of the following activities:

  • Weekly supervision sessions with instructor

  • Interpreting ongoing assignments in a college classroom

  • Preparing for interpreting assignments

  • Work collaboratively with interpreting team. 

  • Maintain a record of hours spent preparing for assignments, tutoring hours, observation hours, and interpreting hours.

  • Submit invoices of interpreting hours to course instructor.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed on interpreting work, completion of community hours, reflections, professionalism, and demeanor. Students must complete 60 hours of class time, assignments, tutoring, and community hours.

Course content includes:

  • Continued development of expressive and receptive simultaneous interpreting skills.

  • Practice successful communication between the student interpreter and team, consumer, and presenter.

  • Use of appropriate professional dress and demeanor, interpreting techniques, preparation, processing, clarification techniques, and production of an interpretation.

  • 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网ment of strategies to control performance anxiety and to become comfortable interpreting in front of an audience.

  • Discussing and analyzing personal skill development 

  • Calculating time spent preparing for, discussing, and performing an interpretation.

  • Interact with the presenter before, during, and after each assignment in a professionally, culturally appropriate manner.
