Course Description

Introduces Japanese language and culture. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken Japanese. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, Kana syllabaries and a limited number of Kanji characters. For beginners. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Read and recognize some words, phrases and simple sentences that are written in Japanese.
  2. Write words, phrases and simple sentences about a limited number of familiar topics.
  3. Speak about a limited number of familiar topics using practiced or memorized words and phrases.
  4. Listen and recognize familiar and memorized words in spoken Japanese.
  5. Recognize some Japanese cultural products and practices related to everyday life.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed by any combination of the following:

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies 

  • Quizzes over syllabaries and Kanji

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

Include all or most of the following:

  1. Greetings, introductions and leave-takings

  2. Age, birth month, and nationality

  3. Japanese names

  4. Time, weather, telephone numbers and price

  5. Academic subjects and majors

  6. Verbs in non-past Masu-form

  7. Verbs in past Masu-form

  8. Native Japanese and Sino-Japanese numbers

  9. Single particles

  10. Predicate using the copula (desu) in past and non-past tense

  11. Interrogatives

  12. Personal pronouns and demonstrative pronouns

  13. Daily activities, and likes and dislikes.

  14. Formulates simple questions and answers

  15. Existence for animate and inanimate objects and locations

  16. Reads and writes Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries

  17. Reads and understands approximately 30 Kanji
