Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

1. Read and understand the general topic, questions and statements in short writings in Japanese.
2. Write mostly simple sentences about familiar and everyday topics.
3. Speak about familiar and everyday topics using simple sentences most of the time.
4. Listen and identify the topic and some isolated elements from simple sentences in spoken Japanese.

5. Explain the cultural perspectives related to some everyday Japanese cultural products and practices.

Students will be assessed by any combination of the following: 

• Active participation in class

• Individual presentations

• Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies

• Quizzes over syllabaries and Kanji

• Oral interviews with partner or instructor

Include all or most of the following:

1. Informal past tense verbs

2. Basic relative clauses 

3. Nominalization

4. List activities in a non-exhaustive list (tari)

5. Describe excess (sugiru)

6. Opinions about past events

7. Report the speech of others

8. Give reasons

9. Indicate order of events (already/yet)

10. Make comparisons and express superlatives

11. Expressing intention

12. Describe changes in state

13. Express a desire

14. Express having had an experience

15. Give nuanced explanations in a culturally appropriate manner

16. Give advice

17. Express a requirement

18. Discuss health and illness

19. Discuss climate, weather and seasons

20. Reads, (writes) and understands Kana syllabaries and approximately 140 kanji
