Course Description

Covers the use of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT) as specified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in specification ASME Y14.5-2009. Introduces the symbols, concepts, and basic use of these techniques for dimensioning and tolerancing used in standard industry practice. This course is also offered as APR 115M; a student who enrolls in this course a second time under either designator will be subject to the course repeat policy. Prerequisites/concurrent: APR 110M or MCH 110B. Audit available.

GD&T I is presents a subset of GD&T that will be of use to beginning machinists.

Students interested in continuing into Metrology or Engineering should also complete GD&T II

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Read and understand basic GDT symbols on a print.

  • Explain basic GDT concepts.

  • Identify minimum and maximum material conditions.

  • Measure and verify position tolerances with applied material conditions.

  • Set up and use basic rectangular datum reference frames.

Course Activities and Design

MCH 115A will be presented by means of audio visual presentations, demonstrations, and research activities. The course activities and design emphasize the development of skills and knowledge outcomes prescribed by established industry standards. The identified outcomes will be achieved by means of individual and team activities.  

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The final grade will be based on the average of a mid-term and a final exam and one lab exercise.  The exams present problems related to tolerances similar to those presented in the textbook exercises.  The lab exercise will give the student the opportunity to practice techniques covered in the class.
