Course Description

Explores the employment and independent market for multimedia professionals, including job qualifications for various positions in small to large organizations, as well as the general business environment for multimedia production. Provides an overview and opportunity to apply methods and practices used in finding and obtaining employment in the multimedia industry. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students who successfully complete this course will have a job marketing portfolio that will include but not limited to: 1) promotional materials such as business cards, web page, etc., 2) job contracts, bids, and proposals,3) copyright guidelines, and 4) entrepreneurial capabilities.
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Create a working resume and a position targeted cover letter.
  • Articulate individual professional background and qualifications verbally in under a minute.
  • Describe the role social media has as it applies to finding and acquiring employment in the multimedia industry.

Course Activities and Design

Course material will be presented in a lecture format. This course is designed to maximize learning through the use of strategies such as outcome based instruction, collaborative learning, contextual application and performance based assessment. Lecture material will consist of discussion, diagrams, multimedia, and other educationally sound practices. Other activities will include hands-on utilization of multimedia software. Demonstration and handout materials will be provided.
 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment is designed to indicate achievement of the course outcome and performance tasks. The instructor will outline the methods used to assess student progress and the criteria for assigning a grade at the beginning of the course. Assessment will be based upon a combination of in-class participation, attendance, examinations, and quality of the multimedia project(s). Determination of problem solving skills, team work, and communication skills may also be included.

  • Students demonstrate their own 30-second promotional speech to the class.
  • Discuss the value of a quality critique and what characteristic one has to promote the value that different perspectives can have on the development of a project.
  • Group critique and discussion of the promotional speech and critique.
