Course Description

Introduces the processes of green screen filming, development of natural and virtual background environments, and compositing. Includes planning, setup, production, and post-production processes. Explores physical and practical special effects alongside emerging technology for industry workflow. Recommended: MM 263. Audit available. Prerequisites: (MM 237 and MM 260) or instructor permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Design visual sequences for compositing.

  2. Evaluate and determine optimum production workflows for green screen shooting and post-production.

  3. Light, shoot, and composite visual sequences using green screen techniques and Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). 

  4. Execute physical and practical effects in production sequence.

Course Activities and Design

Materials will be presented via lectures, demonstrations, screenings, and reading assignments. Students will learn and demonstrate their abilities through hands-on assignments and practical exams. Guest speakers will provide students with exposure to the regional professional production community.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student fulfillment of expected outcomes will be assessed using:  video assignments; which the student demonstrates hands-on skills and abilities; observation by production staff
