Course Description

Explores the changing relationships and responsibilities between organizations and their various stakeholders. Includes social and ethical issues of the community in which the company exists, employee rights and diversity, global corporate citizenship, role of government oversight of business, environmental issues, and consumer protection. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Apply corporate responsibility standards and practices to make ethical and informed market and non-market decisions.
  • Build positive economic relationships with international stakeholders through the use of global corporate citizenship practices.
  • Examine and understand the contributions of business organizations to environmental problems in order to control and mitigate them.
  • Apply sustainable practices in the workplace, community, and home.

  • Describe how a business’ economic decision should be impacted by its social responsibility to its stakeholders
  • Describe how the “utilitarian, rights and justice based models” impact ethical decision-making
  • Explain the importance of government regulations and that they are followed within the workplace
  • Discuss reasons for corporate philanthropy and methods it is carried out
  • Identify how to ensure employee rights and confidentiality are maintained in the workplace
  • Submit several research papers focusing on one or more social responsibility concepts covered in the class incorporating research and composition skills

General Concepts

  •   Describe the influence of the shareholder when organizations are making financial decisions
  •   Explain the responsibility of the business to develop products that are safe for consumer use
  •   Describe steps for ensuring the business is “free” of discriminatory practices
  •   Demonstrate techniques for teaching employees the importance of maintaining confidentiality - both customer and employee
  •   Establish processes that ensure managers and supervisors practice social responsibility with their various stakeholders
  •   Stress the importance of stakeholder management
