Course Description

Continues the study of techniques and methods used to develop rhythmic skills through listening, writing, and performing. Includes performance, transcription and composition of rhythms using tuplets; polyrhythms; odd meters; and mixed meters. Covers hypermeter and metric phrasing. Recommended: concurrent enrollment in MUS 113, MUS 113C, and MUS 193P. Audit available. Prerequisites: MUC 130B or instructor permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify rhythmic components such as tempo, beat, divisions, and subdivisions in common simple and compound meters.

  2. Perform commonly employed polyrhythms.

  3. Perform rhythms in odd meters and mixed meters.

  4. Perform and transcribe short rhythmic examples in simple meters that contain beat, divisions, and subdivision patterns, including syncopation within a measure at the beat or division level.

  5. Create and perform rhythms in simple meters that contain subdivisions, dotted notation, and tuplets other than triplets.
