Course Description

Introduces the historical context, stylistic development, and cultural impact of American rock music from the 1950s to the present. Includes origins of the style and related genres. Examines how instruments, technology, media, and popular culture affect how rock music is created and marketed. Also covers global versions of rock music. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Explain the history of rock music in social contexts.
  2. Aurally identify and analyze elements of the rock style from various eras and genres.
  3. Describe technological advancements in the production and commercialization of rock music.
  4. Critically analyze and defend positions on music recordings and/or performances.

  • Discuss the social implications and impact of rock music through its eras.
