Course Description
Introduces a working knowledge of the fundamental techniques employed in the art of Kodolan Judo. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Judo gi (uniform) highly recommended. Strong sweat bottoms and tops are acceptable, but must be devoid of metal or hard objects. Rings, earrings and body piercings are not allowed during physical participation due to potential injury to other students or self.

SUBJECT MATTER: CONCEPTS, THEMES, ISSUES (TOPICAL AREAS):
- Warm-ups and cool-downs
- Conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
- Etiquette, basic Japanese words for Judo, and discipline
- History of Judo
- Rules of contest, terminology
- Basic body movement (tai sabaki)
- Throws, hold downs, choking, arm locks
- Analysis of weakness (direction of throws)
- Safety concerns
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:
- Practice warm-ups and cool-downs
- Select appropriate conditioning, stretching, and endurance exercises
- Understand the importance of bowing etiquette/discipline
- Demonstrate basic tumbling and controlled falling techniques (ukemi)
- Demonstrate off-balancing techniques (kuzushi)
- Show basic throwing techniques (tachiwaza - foot/leg throws, hand/arm throws,
- hip throws)
- Show basic mat hold downs (newaza)
- Demonstrate basic choking (shime waza)
- Demonstrate controlled arm locks (kansetzu waza)
- Understand basic Japanese words and phrases as used in Judo
