Course Description

Ski on intermediate/advanced terrain with dynamic parallel turns. Apply edging, pressure control, rotary and balancing movements to allow confidence and versatility on steeper terrain and in varying snow conditions. Addresses variables of weather, snow conditions, and terrain. Recommended: Intermediate Alpine class or equivalent. Audit available.

Course Activities and Design

An orientation session will be held at the college to collect
fees, distribute tickets and answer questions. At the ski area,
students will be placed in small classes with other students of
similar ability. Classes will be conducted each of the five weeks
on snow at the ski area. Lab/practice time will be available to
supplement class time with the instructor, and independent
practice is of the utmost importance. In addition to skiing
skills and movement patterns, safety and skier etiquette will also
be emphasized.

Students must provide appropriate clothing for varying weather
conditions.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students grades will be assigned on a pass/no pass basis only and
will be based on:

  1. Attendance - attendance at five classes is required for a pass.
  2. Active participation and effort in class.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

EXPECTED STUDENT COMPETENCIES:

The course is designed to teach refined skill application of
edging, pressure control, balancing and rotary movements to allow
students to ski on advanced terrain at any ski area with
confidence and control. Advanced blending of the four fundamental
skills, skating, diverging parallel turns, dynamic parallel turns,
varied turn shapes, and adaptations for varying snow conditions
will be taught and practiced. Controlled dynamic parallel turns
on advanced terrain will be a goal during the 5-week class.
Safety will be stressed and every effort will be made to develop
an excitement about the lifetime sport of skiing in each student.

1. Skiing Skills

Instructional Goal:
Refine the student's understanding and blended application of the
balancing, rotary, edging and pressure control movements outlined
in the PSIA American Teaching System for Alpine Skiing, applied
appropriately to the following movements.

Objectives:

  1. Pressure transfer during turn initiation and control throughout the turn.
  2. Carrying momentum from turn to turn.
  3. Application of edge control movements in combination with the other skills to effectively use the ski to carve.
  4. Play with movement patterns to develop versatility in different terrain and snow conditions.
  5. Skating and diverging parallel turns.
  6. Dynamic parallel turns.


2. Safety Aspects

Instructional Goal:
Familiarize students with important safety aspects of the sport.

Objectives:

  1. Introduce students to the Oregon Skier's Responsibility Code.
  2. Review of ski equipment and the proper operation of the binding system.
  3. Teach students the safe use of the all lift systems, including chairlifts and surface tows, if applicable.
  4. Deal with varying weather conditions and proper preparation for outdoor winter activity.
  5. Introduce students to a variety of terrain as their  skills allow.
  6. Utilize varying snow conditions as appropriate to expand skill application.
  7. Use turn shape to control speed and develop confidence  on advanced terrain and in different snow conditions.



3. Awareness/Appreciation of Skiing

Instructional Goal:

Objectives:

  1. Create a positive learning environment that allows  learning to occur and individual student confidence to be developed.
