Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and leadership for group fitness classes. Covers components of group fitness classes, styles of group exercise, and teaching methods. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Design and implement group fitness programs with appropriate use of music, choreography, and cueing.

  • Apply effective teaching strategies in group fitness instruction.

  • Apply motivational strategies to promote participation in group fitness.

  • Explore current trends and employment opportunities in the group fitness industry.

  • Safety and risk management in group fitness programs.

  • Methods in monitoring intensity.

  • Health screening and assessment in group fitness.

  • Strategies to develop a positive group dynamic and supportive community for each class member in group fitness environments.

  • Critical analysis of group fitness instructors in live classes and on video.

  • Exploration of group fitness formats and styles.

  • Current trends in group fitness.

  • Group fitness certification and employment.
