Course Description

Explores fitness instruction and leadership for older adult populations. Provides tools and information needed to design fitness training programs for healthy older individuals and groups. Prerequisites: FT 202. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Design and implement health and fitness assessments and programming for older adults based on scientific foundations.
  2. Apply effective teaching strategies in older adult fitness instruction.
  3. Apply motivational strategies to promote participation in older adult fitness activities.
  4. Explore current trends and employment opportunities for fitness instruction in older adult populations.

    • Older adult fitness video analysis
    • Senior fitness testing and programming project
    • Lesson plan and teaching demonstration

      Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

      1. Motivation and exercise adherence strategies for older adults
      2. Safety for individuals, equipment, and facilities when leading fitness programs for older adults
      3. Pre-exercise screening tools and fitness assessment for older adults
      4. Fitness programs, classes, and instruction methods for older adults
      5. Fitness prescriptions for older adults in each of the areas of fitness
      6. Exercise modifications, as needed, for individual or facility considerations
      7. Additional wellness issues for older adults (housing, nutrition, recreation, etc.)
      8. Certifications and employment for older adult fitness instructors and trainers
