Course Description

Introduces the fundamental concepts and working terminology of landlord tenant law. Includes the creation of a landlord/tenant relationship, the legal rights of landlords and tenants, unlawful detainer, and other proceedings to enforce rights. Prerequisites: PL 101. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

 Explores the legal rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants from the perspective of a legal professional representing the interests of clients. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Describe the landlord/tenant relationship.

  2. Identify and explain the rights and responsibilities of a landlord and tenant with concrete examples.

  3. Explain the legal liability of landlords and tenants for injuries.

  4. Describe and apply the law governing equal housing opportunities and housing discrimination.

  5. Describe and apply the law governing rental agreements including evaluating and drafting agreements.

  6. Identify and explain lawful means of terminating tenancies.

  7. Use critical thinking skills to analyze whether an unlawful detainer or other wrongs against a tenant have been committed.

Course Activities and Design

Flexible dependent on needs of student population and preferred teaching style of instructor, but may include reading assignments; videos; lectures; guest speakers; small group projects and discussions; independent research; analysis of hypothetical problems; written reports; and student presentations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

May include attendance and participation in class activities, written assignments, tests, individual research and writting, drafting relevant legal documents, and analysis of legal issues.
