Course Description
Introduces principles of daily animal husbandry, socialization, enrichment, and clinical care of animals housed in campus facilities. Explores teamwork, communication, veterinary technical skills, and principles of professionalism encountered in the daily operations of a multi-species veterinary facility. Prerequisites: Admission to Veterinary Technology program.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion, students should be able to:
- Communicate (written and orally) in a professional manner while working as an effective member of a healthcare team.
- Behave with the professionalism and accountability required of a practicing veterinary technician.
- Monitor, assess, document, and report relevant animal care information to colleagues, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrate entry-level skills in the delivery of proper husbandry, preventive care, medical diagnostics and treatments, enrichment and facility management.
Course Activities and Design
This course will meet for 2 hours of lecture per week. Lecture and discussion topics will focus on the fundamentals of animal care for college-owned animals as well as the interpersonal skills and professional development expected of veterinary technicians working in a cooperative team approach.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
- Written examinations, quizzes, and participation in class discussions
- AVMA-approved check-off sheets that consist of standardized criteria for assessing the completion of the technical as well as interpersonal skills expected of an entry-level veterinary technician
- Graduate performance on the “Nursing” sub-section of the Veterinary Technicians National Examination
- These outcomes will be routinely assessed and used to drive relevant changes in the curriculum
