Course Description

Covers shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process to weld carbon steel pipes in advanced positions. Prerequisites: WLD 291 or department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Function safely in a welding shop and a shipyard environment.
  2. Interpret blueprints to lay out, prepare, and assemble pipe coupons.
  3. Use SMAW equipment according to industry-standard codes.
  4. Weld full penetration butt joints on carbon steel pipes using SMAW in advanced positions according to industry-standard codes.
  5. Assess weld quality through the application of visual examination principles and practices in accordance with industry-standard codes.

Course Activities and Design

Each concept will be delivered via a combination of lectures and videos followed by practical demonstrations and hands-on application in the welding lab.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection, welding tests and task performance.
