Faculty, nominate your CBL Students for the Community Engagement Award!

The CBL Program recognizes students for their community-based learning efforts in their courses and communities. Read more about last year’s awardees – Delaney Larimore and Ian Redding! In addition to gaining valuable academic and work skills, students who receive the Community Engagement Award receive a signed certificate, college recognition, and the benefit of including the award on scholarship applications and resumes. Deadline for nominations to be considered for the current Academic Year is the first Friday of May.

PCC Cascade’s Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair

This Spring Term, twenty non-profits and organizations serving different areas and needs of Northeast Portland are here to connect you with your community. I. Eliot Litter Cleanup Saturday, 03/12/2016 9:00 AM-11:00 AM

Join your neighbors to clean up our streets. Teams of volunteers will pick up litter on Eliot streets and sidewalks. Stay for coffee and conversation afterward. Gloves, bags, and safety vests will be provided. Teams will be given a map of their assigned streets. We need folks with pickups to help haul bags to Metro Central at 6161 NW 61st Ave., Portland 10:30-11:30. In addition to the Saturday event, you are encouraged to adopt your street to maintain litter pickup. Volunteers are asked to register online or complete waiver forms on event day. Rain or shine.
Activities include: Litter Cleanup.

II. March Second Saturday Cleanup, Saturday, 03/12/2016 9:00 AM-10:00 AM

Join volunteers for this monthly Second Saturday Cleanup in Northwest Portland. Pick up litter from NW Vaughn to Raleigh, NW 22nd to 26th. Coffee/tea and pastries hosted by Food Front on their front terrace. Come dressed for the weather.

III. Linnton Creek Project for March, Saturday, 03/12/2016 9:00 AM-12:00 PM

Linnton Creek is a principle stream in Forest Park, one of the main trail heads in the north end of the park, and its confluence with the Willamette River will have a new lagoon, as part of the 27 acre Linnton Plywood Mill site’s restoration as animal habitat (a Superfund mitigation site). We are restoring the creek trail head, removing ivy and blackberry, planting natives, and installing an interpretive sign, trash can and custom (and amusing) dog waste bag dispenser designed by noted artist Ivan McLean. Part of a broad effort to eliminate dog waste from the park, this site is particularly important as the creek will flow into a new lagoon designed as a resting place for salmon fry, where clean water will be crucial. At the moment the main effort is ivy removal and the planting of almost 300 native plants. Hot and cold beverages, pastries, tools and gloves are provided. We’ll be having a celebration of the project’s completion in June.

IV. NWDA Third Saturday March Cleanup, Saturday, 03/19/2016 9:00 AM-10:00 AM

Join volunteers for this monthly Third Saturday Cleanup in Northwest Portland. Pick up litter and remove graffiti in the area. Join us for some coffee and conversation afterward. Volunteers should come prepared with completed waiver forms (if possible) and work gloves on cold days.
Activities include: Litter Cleanup.

V. TOM’s March Pick Up the Pearl, Wednesday, 03/23/2016 5:00 PM-7:00 PM

TOMS Portland is gearing up to pamper the Pearl District Neighborhood with a litter pickup!

Join us in cleaning up our city, having a great time and connecting to the community. You won’t want to miss our fun contests: “Most trash gathered” – wins a pair of shoes, “Most cigarette butts gathered” – wins a pair of sunglasses, and “Weirdest piece of trash found” – wins a bag of TOM’s coffee! Enjoy beverages and free snacks! TOMS SHOES store located on W. Burnside St. It’s bound to be a smashing time!

2. Climate Ride: Charitable Sustainability Bike Trip for 18-24 Year-Olds

We’re excited to announce Climate Ride’s newest program, Summer Session 2016 – Portland to Santa Barbara. Climate Ride’s Summer Session is a 3-week, 1,200-mile charity bike trip for 18-24 year olds from Portland, OR to Santa Barbara, CA to raise awareness and support for bike advocacy and sustainability causes. Passing through some of the Pacific Coast’s most impressive scenery, it’s an adventure you will never forget. Space is limited to 20 participants.

3. PCRI: 3/14 Community Forum about the Grant Warehouse Redevelopment

Please join Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, Inc., Gerding Edlen, Colas Construction and Carleton Hart Architecture on March 14 as we host our first open house forum to share information and invite feedback on the redevelopment proposed for the site of the former Grant Warehouse.

Initial designs for the housing and commercial space at this site are being developed and community feedback is important to guide decisions and choices that will benefit and impact the residents and business tenants of the finished building, as well as the larger neighborhood. Friends of Trees invites the PCC community to join us as we continue to create a green and healthy Tualatin River Greenway! Spending a few hours to plant trees with us will bring health, economic, and social benefits to this special multi-use path for generations to come!

When: Saturday, Mar 12th, 9am-1pm (Please arrive around 8:45am to be registered in time to enjoy some free breakfast snacks and hot coffee/tea)

II. Planting Volunteers Needed – Mar 19th – Fernhill Wetlands!

Friends of Trees invites is recruiting volunteers for Sat, 3/19, as we continue our restoration efforts at Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove! This planting is part of the Tree For All campaign which has planted over three million native plants in the Tualatin River Watershed in the past decade! Spending a few hours to plant trees with us will bring health, economic, and social benefits to this area for generations to come!

Are you looking to expand your leadership, public speaking or naturalist skills while helping protect some of Oregon’s most remarkable places? If so, apply to become a Volunteer Crew Leader or Naturalist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon. Crew Leaders support our statewide restoration work party program, while Naturalists serve at one Nature Conservancy preserve: Cascade Head Preserve on the coast, Camassia Natural Area in West Linn or Tom McCall Preserve in the Columbia River Gorge. Crew Leaders and Naturalists must attend a 1-day training session and commit to volunteering at least twice during the 2016 field season.

6. Green Lents: Join Green Lents for our monthly work parties at Malden Court Community Orchard!

The Malden Court Community Orchard is a multi-story food forest located in the Lents neighborhood. Our goals are to create and maintain a community orchard that reflect the needs, desires and dreams of our diverse community. The top priorities for the community orchard, as expressed by our community during canvasing & public design meetings are: Growing Food & Harvesting, Building Community & Collaboration, Creating Learning & Skill Building Opportunities, Improving Watershed Health, and Sharing Abundance.

The easiest way to get involved with this project is to come to one of our monthly work parties! Our next work party will be focused on invasive species management and soil health. Snacks, tools, and coffee will be provided! No RSVP required!

7. Rigler SUN: Rigler SUN School Extended day Assistant

Rigler SUN needs volunteers for our SUN school extended day. SUN school provides students at Rigler an afterschool experience of education and recreation through homework help, supper, recess, and an enrichment class. SUN school is ran Monday through Thursday from 2:15 – 5pm. Join us and help create a positive space for growth!

9. OHSU: Volunteer with the OHSU Farmers Market & Sustainable Food Projects

OHSU Farmers Market is looking for summer volunteers! The positions start in mid May and run through the end of September. We are requesting a minimum commitment of 40 hours. Volunteer positions include:

  • Hosting a consignment table of all local goods on the market day
  • Wholesale collection of goods for use in a retail setting
  • Food service experience in a commercial kitchen
  • Set up & break down logistics of the farmers market
  • Token disbursement, data collection, & communications outreach
  • Tracking pilot recycling projects
  • Compliance checks with Nutrition and Food Service regulations

Eligibility: 18 years of age; able to lift minimum of 20 lbs; friendly and enthusiastic, willingness to obtain food handlers license (paid by OHSU).
Available Shifts: 1hr to all day shifts, anytime on Tuesdays between 8am-5pm, June – Sept, min of 40 hours
