Support Immigrant and Refugee Students at David Douglas High School
Volunteers needed for RISE at David Douglas High School, an after school academic support program for immigrant and refugee students run through the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO). RISE provides both after school homework clubs and conversation clubs that support newcomer students with their transition into the American school system.?Volunteer community members needed as tutors, mentors and group facilitators.
Position Description:?RISE is recruiting for our summer program, which takes place Monday-Friday from June 22nd –July 21st. Both in-class teaching assistants and afterschool group?facilitators are needed. In-class teaching assistants will work from 8:00-11:00, helping students?with language learning assignments as well as fun and engaging conversational activities.
Afterschool group facilitators will work from 11:30-2:00 and will help facilitate various art based?workshops to help students practice English and build community with each other.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, Morning Class: 8am-11am; Afternoon Workshops: 11:30pm-1:30pm
(volunteer commitment: 1 day/week minimum (morning or afternoon, preferably both))
Summer school runs from June 22nd –July 21st (no school July 3rd/4th) and volunteers must commit to a minimum of 1 day/week (morning or afternoon session). However, we encourage summer volunteers to be as involved as they can. Since summer school is only 4 weeks long, we invite you to be as involved as you can be so as to get the most out of it.
Qualifications and Time Commitment: Ideal volunteers have experience in teaching, tutoring, or?group facilitation and/or speak Somali, Karen, Burmese, Nepali, Arabic, Spanish, Russian,?Ukranian, or Vietnamese. However, compassion, commitment, and a good sense of humor are?all that is needed. Volunteers must commit to at least one day (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,?Thursday or Friday) per week (from June 22 nd -July 21 st ) for either a morning or afternoon?session. Volunteers are encouraged to volunteer more than once a week so as to build strong?relationships with students and gain more for the overall experience.

About the Organization
The Refugee and Immigrant Student Empowerment (RISE) program is an?educational enrichment program for recently arrived refugee and immigrant students in grades?9-12. RISE is delivered as a drop in program that provides tutoring services to an average of 35?students a day. RISE aims to develop the academic skills and confidence to support the success?of these students in American educational systems through Tutoring and Conversation Clubs.?Over the summer, RISE provides academic support to ELD summer classes, as well as?conversation clubs and after school art workshops.
