Withdrawn at SAC request
Presented as a “special topics” course, with open-ended content to accommodate the rapidly changing needs in Criminal Justice education and training. The Committee has not been recommending courses with undefined content, because experience has suggested that this practice can create problems for students, such as restricted in how many times such a course may be taken for credit, or reimbursement by employers even if they need the different content/training is needed. The CJA SAC recognizes these issues, and agrees to use the 199, 299 Experimental Course system to provide these topical courses,

New Course
Postponed at SAC request.
The committee was reluctant to add three new courses of this nature, and recommended PS111, following the precedent established with HST. The PS 113 request indicates that ADP courses have been approved for History (HST 111, 112, and 113), but in fact only HST 111 was proposed, and recommended by Curriculum Committee January 10, 2007 (Item 66). HST 111 supports work performed in HST 201, 202 and 203.
The SAC representative explained that students would not be required to take the course, but acknowledged that some students (Gateway students and others) would be encouraged to do so. Among the concerns expressed by the faculty were: the increased credits (1 vs. 3 for students taking all three PS courses) would reduce course options for students, increased cost to non-Gateway students encouraged (or feeling pressure) to take the courses, multiple offerings in a single discipline area suggests students are not moving from needing support to working independently at a college level.
These courses were discussed as a group, but the motion to Recommend was for the PS 111 course only, and passed unanimously.
The SAC representative elected to postpone the request on the other two courses rather than take it to a vote, which would likely send it forward as Not Recommended. They will be considered further by the SAC and may return for reconsideration at a future meeting.
