2018 Photo Contest
Seeing the World: City life, nature landscapes, global differences
- 2018 Winner: “Toho Theaters Guardian” by Dalton Lyons (Japanese in Japan). “Photo of Godzilla over Toho theater and the busy crowd of Shinjuku.”
- 2018 Runner up: “Natural Imitations” by Adryan Phillips (Japanese in Japan). “I learned this in an unrelated art-history class, but only fully understood it while visiting Japan; Asian culture’s have a unique view of beauty that is not common in more western countries. The more simple and natural looking something is, the more beautiful it is.”
Embracing New Cultures: Food, cultural lifestyles, local traditions and activities
- 2018 Winner: “Friend Request” by Katherine Cox (Health, Food Systems, and the Environment in Cuba). “This was a candid photo taken in Old Havana of a working man and colorfully dressed woman engaged in a friendly conversation. Although she is holding a cell phone, it is unlikely she is using the internet because Wi-Fi is difficult to come by in Cuba. I noticed that Cubans were more comfortable socially interacting with each other; my theory is the lack of internet influences this culture of warmth and connection.”
- 2018 Runner up: “Experiencing New Cultures” by David Prescott (Sociology in Bolivia). “This picture was taken July 8, 2018 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. This is the tallest statue of Jesus in the world. When building it the deliberately made it 6 inches taller than the very famous one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I later felt a sense of shame for being Catholic in Bolivia after I learned of all their hard work to colonize.”
Self-Discovery: What you’ve learned about yourself through your travels or your academic course
- 2018 Winner: “La Sagrada Família” by Destiney Baker (Film Studies in Spain). “This gorgeous structure is the inside of a catholic church in Spain called La Sagrada Família. Though I stray from religion myself this experience was unlike anything I’ve felt in a church. From the art to height of the building itself this is the place to be when in Spain.”
- 2018 Runner up: “Self-Discovery” by Emory Neer (Health, Food Systems, and the Environment in Cuba). “This is a picture that got taken at Zenit Tattoo in Santa Fe, Cuba by Latinta magazine; Cuba’s first body art magazine. I sometimes get social anxiety, and tend to feel like my presence is a burden and I suck at socializing. I went to this tattoo shop last minute, completely on a whim, and ended up making friends with everyone there and hanging out into the night. Apparently I have social skills.”
