In conjunction with the Southern Graphics Council International’s 2016 conference in Portland, Cascade Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition of themed print portfolios. Tourist’s Folly is comprised of prints by local national and international artists, and sideshow-themed prints from by PCC student artist portfolios.

Tourist’s Folly

The roving, transitory nature of the SGCI conference lends itself to consideration of modern society’s aspiration for tourism and the artist’s role as a tourist. The prints in this exhibit are artists visual interpretations of the consequences when places, people or objects are exoticized and commodified by or for an audience of tourists via slogans such as “Keep Portland Weird”. The portfolio highlights the artist’s particular experience while travelling as outsiders within their own local culture. Each artist has created an edition of oversized, fictional travel brochures, which investigate the fluctuating relationship between arts, culture and tourism.

Sideshow

Student artist’s respond to the theme Sideshow. Each student created an edition of archival prints made using a printing process of their choice. The prints portray students’ visions of the strange and remarkable, carnival excesses, imaginary festivals and or diverting incidents or issues.
