Dorothy Goode: Hypochondria Drawings
Rock Creek Helzer Gallery
March 2017
While she is better known for her lushly chromatic abstract paintings, Dorothy Goode also makes drawings – drawings that have rarely been exhibited. The works in this exhibition are selected from a body of more than 300 related pieces – a project she began about 12 years ago and titled The Hypochondria Drawings. As a totality, the work is a running commentary – part personal diary, part a journal of her thoughts expressed through imagery and words. Her subjects range from the very personal to the political, with snippets of art history, current events, and portraits added to the mix. The writing, which is barely intelligible and often covers part of the image, occurs later – sometimes months or even years later – and may or may not refer to the imagery. The resulting works are arresting and enigmatic.
