Cascade Gallery presents Heidi Schwegler, Slipping Underwater. Schwegler is acknowledging Sartre’s existential concept that refers to self-deception, “I must know the truth very exactly in order to conceal it more carefully”, (Sartre, Being and Nothingness). As there is an indicative paradox built from the contradiction that oneself is free to make choices in life or oneself is bound to external circumstances. Contradiction riddles and laps against self. This is to demonstrate ‘bad faith’ and to exercise such bad faith is to experience anguish. Self inflected anguish has no conventional code of conduct, the opponent is invisible and does not exist, and is pointedly insidious. Schwegler’s installation is comprised of sculptural objects, digital images and video, placed together they become external manifestations of a moment of anguish.
