What if community college was more than you imagined?

Learn more about why those myths you’ve heard are wrong.

Myth #1: Community college is easier than a four-year university.

Not quite. Professors at community colleges have studied and worked years in their field, and expect big things from students. Plus, many professors in the Portland area teach at multiple schools and share curriculum.

Myth #2: Community college isn’t a legit option for valedictorians and AP students.

You might have been told that going to community college is a last resort … but don’t ever listen to that person. Especially if you want to save thousands of dollars. Lower cost means more freedom to explore different options, and takes the pressure off of making the “right” choice on your first try. And, there are lots of super competitive programs at PCC.

Myth #3: It’s hard to make friends at community college.

There’s this rumor that community college is a place where you go to class and leave without making eye contact with anyone else. How boring would that be?! Tons of people at community colleges are trying to find their people.

Myth #4: Community college doesn’t have sports.

Students at four-year schools aren’t the only ones who get to dress up in ridiculous costumes and root loudly for their favorite teams. Community colleges have leagues of their own, and PCC has some of the best soccer and basketball teams in the region.

Myth #5: Transferring to another school after community college will be hard.

There’s this handy thing offered at Oregon community colleges called the Oregon Transfer Degree. It covers all your basic pre-reqs: math, writing, science, and history. So no matter where you go, chances are these are the exact same classes you’d take in your first two years at university anyways.

Myth #6: Community college is just a starting point.

Sure, you can get a transfer degree at community college. But that’s only one type of degree offered. Why limit yourself? PCC has many certificates that launch you straight into a career.
