Setting up Notifications in D2L Brightspace

Inside of your D2L Brightspace account you can add or edit the types of notifications you can receive from the system, including email and text message options.

You can access the Notifications area of your account by following these steps:

  1. Login to D2L Brightspace
  2. Click your name in the upper right hand corner of your account
  3. Click Notifications

Once you click Notifications you will be taken to a page with the following sections:

  1. Brightspace Pulse app
  2. Contact Methods
  3. Summary of Activity
  4. Instant Notification
  5. Customize Notifications
  6. Exclude some Courses

Brightspace Pulse

D2L has created an app for Android and iOS devices that allows you view important information about your courses via your smartphone or tablet device. You can find more information about that on our Brightspace Pulse App page.

Contact Methods

Email

In this area you can verify or edit the email address D2L Brightspace will send summary reports and instant notifications to. If you click the “Change your email settings” link then you can edit the address that D2L Brightspace sends theses messages to (in case you prefer to check your personal address).

Summary of Activity

In this section you can allow D2L Brightspace to send you an email that includes an overall breakdown of updates within all course shells you have access to.

Use the drop down menu to select whether you want a Daily or Weekly message to be sent. After you have made your selection be sure to click the Save option at the bottom of the Notifications page.

Note: See the Exclude Some Courses section below for how you would stop certain courses (ex. Online Student Resource Center) from showing up in your Summary of Activity messages.

Instant Notifications

In this section you can allow D2L Brightspace to send an SMS (if you registered a Mobile Number) or email to you when any number of the types of changes that are listed on the page happen within a course shell you have access to.

Check each box in the list, in each column, to enable the listed instant notification. After you have made your selection be sure to click the Save option at the bottom of the Notifications page.

Customize Notifications

If there are any further customization options that are available to your account then they will be listed here. The main options that are available are:

  1. Include my grade value in notifications from Grades
    • If your Grade is updated in a course then the Instant Notification will also include what the grade was without needing to sign into the system
  2. Allow future courses to send me notifications
    • If you are signed up for courses for the upcoming term, or that haven’t opened yet, then this will allow that course to still send you messages.

Exclude Some Courses

If there is a course shell you have access to that you do NOT want updates from then you can follow these steps to tell D2L Brightspace to ignore that course:

  1. Access the Notifications area of your D2L Brightspace account
  2. Scroll down to the Exclude Some Courses Section
  3. Click the Manage my course exclusions link
  4. Locate the course that you no longer wish to get updates from
  5. Click the X icon to the right of the course title
    • The X icon should turn into an icon that looks like a blue arrow pointing to the left
  6. Click the Close button
  7. Click the Save button at the bottom of the Notifications page

If you would like to turn notifications back on for a course you excluded then you can follow the steps above. At Step 5 you will press the blue arrow icon that should be showing to the right of the course title (instead of the X button). From there you will continue with steps 6 and 7 above.
