Job Summary

The College Web Designer excels in user-centered design principles, has excellent communication skills, and is committed to creating inclusive and accessible digital content. This position is responsible for the design of the main College website (pcc.edu) and most external and internal sites and applications, and for setting and maintaining standards for web design on all college sites and applications. Work impacts a significant population of users including potential students’ first impression and online experience with the College. Work involves high-level of problem solving, is performed independently and requires the ability to adapt and respond to changing policies, processes, and a dynamic environment.

This position is distinguished from division/department web designers by the following:

  • Oversees and is the authority for decisions regarding the creation and maintenance of college web design standards.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains the display of information for PCC websites and applications, with a focus on usability, accessibility, and visual appeal across all browsers and devices.
  • Collaborates with college marketing leadership and adheres to college branding, making adjustments when necessary to better fit the web-based environment.
  • Designs and develops web templates and frameworks, design libraries, and content management system themes, working with developers as needed.
  • Provides direction and leadership for web-related best practices and technologies, and provides support for all aspects of web content, concepts, data, and visuals.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serves as the lead for all visual aspects of PCC websites and applications. Work involves using appropriate tools for web design and front-end development to design, build, test, and maintain digital designs and website content to ensure the optimal user experience. Works with appropriate college and consultant staff to create web-based services that are standards-based, highly functional, and well integrated.

Employs usability testing to ensure that web services meet the needs of target audiences.
  3. Guides clients in formulating requirements and defining processes; advises on alternatives and implications of new or revised services. Analyzes resulting proposals and conducts feasibility studies; recommends an optimum approach and develops system design for approved projects. Works directly with clients to develop materials for use on college websites.
  4. Monitors web-based services and content for accuracy, quality, and accessibility, and ensures that standards are met and timely corrective actions are taken.
  5. Coordinates work with other college web development, marketing, and administrative efforts to ensure proper integration.
  6. Evaluates and demonstrates new web technologies as they become available, for the purpose of determining how these fit into the PCC environment.
  7. Evaluates third-party products for usability and accessibility, and provides design and coding support for these products for college use.

  9. Provides support for developing and maintaining web content as necessary, in adherence with web-based writing and accessibility guidelines.
  10. Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree or two (2) years of college-level coursework in communication, graphic or media arts, advertising journalism, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Two (2) years of professional web design experience in projects performing these or similar duties. Demonstrated proficiency in web design, graphic design, front-end development, and information architecture. Demonstrated experience in interface design and project management.

Expertise in web design, current web design standards, front-end development, information architecture, and graphic design. Knowledge of web analytics, common web development tools and technologies, and current regulations and laws.

Ability to assess organizational needs and recommend and execute appropriate web solutions; manage and coordinate complex projects; set and meet timelines, budget, and design objectives; build and maintain effective client relationships; communicate technical concepts and ideas in individual and group situations; devise creative and innovative solutions to complex problems; apply usability and analytical skills to assess web effectiveness and accessibility; work independently and as part of a team.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work environment includes typical computer-related noise levels. Exposure to video display terminals occurs on a regular basis. Works in a dynamic production environment with other specialists. Learned physical skill is required for keyboarding and the use of peripheral equipment.
