Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program Support Specialist is responsible for developing and coordinating the laboratory activities of didactic classes, clinical experiences and other instructionally related activities for the PCC MLT program. In addition, the specialist will assist with community and marketing outreach of the program. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for developing and enhancing the laboratory curricula; assisting faculty with assessing students during laboratory activities and developing practical examinations; instructing classes and labs as needed; assist coordination student clinical rotation activities, requirements, and placement of students; and participation in program planning.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares materials and supports program laboratory courses, including: lab activities to meet course objectives, lab supplies for each lab activity, process improvements and streamlining lab operations, and supports faculty in student evaluation & instruction during laboratory activities.
- Maintains equipment, including certification of equipment. Researches and recommends lab equipment purchases.
- Manages program waste material and disposal.
- Revises and maintains laboratory manuals and standard operating procedures. Recommends lab curriculum updates and changes.
- Creates and maintains MLT inventory tracking system. Orders supplies, reagents and microbiological media, as needed.
- Coordinates student clinical rotation requirements (immunizations, background checks, drug screens, health assessments).
- Conducts, and/or coordinates, community outreach and program promotion to prospective student. Assists with negotiating and maintaining student placements for clinical rotations at area clinical affiliate sites.
- Supports student learning through open labs and other activities.
- Assists and supports faculty with record keeping, instruction, course planning, program development, and program review and accreditation activities. Teaches MLT classes as needed and as qualification allows.
- Participates in MLT department, SAC, Advisory Committee, and industry partner meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Physical ability to sit, stand and move freely about the laboratory; Lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds is occasionally required; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to efficiently, accurately and safely operate laboratory equipment; visual abilities to accurately perform and interpret laboratory tests (correctable vision to read size 8 font print, distinguish colors, distinguish shades and accurate depth perception); hearing abilities to distinguish a range of instrument alarm tones.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, AND
MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent, AND
Two (2) years of experience working in a clinical laboratory setting performing testing or in a post-secondary education program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Current clinical laboratory practices in the departments of chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology and blood bank;
- Laboratory information system operations;
- Safe laboratory operational procedures.
Skills in:
- Working effectively with the diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds;
- Communicating effectively through oral and written media;
- Evaluating and updating and/or revising program materials;
- Performing procedures requiring fine manual dexterity.
Ability to:
- Operate clinical laboratory equipment;
- Train and evaluate students in conformance with PCC and NAACLS standards;
- React calmly and, in accordance to protocol, in an eventuality of accident or exposure in the laboratory environment;
- Coordinate and manage multiple projects and activities;
- Utilize computer hardware/software to effectively perform duties required in the support of educational program (word processing, spreadsheets, web browser, presentation software, academic information systems);
- Operate specific office equipment (telephone, fax, document scanners, multi-function printers, network printers, copiers);
- Adapt to rapidly evolving technology.
