Job Summary
Position responsibilities include coordinating the scheduling and assignment of?CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation), Sign Language Interpreters, and TypeWell Transcribers. The Coordinator develops goals and objectives for staff interpreters and transcribers, monitors the assigned budget and provides monthly reports; collaborates with students and staff to discuss and assess individual needs, and provides interpreting and transcribing services as needed.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluates prospective Sign Language Interpreters, CART Captioners and TypeWell Transcribers for PCC needs. Assists with hiring and contracting of qualified interpreters and transcribers.
- Schedules and assigns Sign Language Interpreters, CART Captioners and TypeWell Transcribers in response to requested accommodations. Promotes an inclusive team environment with an emphasis on fostering high quality professional skills and client services. Reviews interpreter and transcriber time cards for accuracy.
- Works with PCC staff to ensure captioning of audiovisual media as needed.
- Assists staff in scheduling providers to meet the interpreting and transcribing needs of PCC staff and faculty. Ensures that communication access providers working as Independent Contractors are successfully integrated into the PCC’s system. Receives and reviews invoices from independent contractors.
- Monitors service expenses and works within assigned budget. 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网s regular reports as requested by the Director. Collaborates with practitioners in Disability Services on interpreting and transcribing services.
- Provides in-class interpreting and transcribing services for students; assesses student needs and provided services before and during assignments, adjusting services as needed.
- Works with instructors and students in PCC’s Sign Language Interpreter Training Program (SLIP). Schedules classroom observations, mentors SLIP students, and assigns designated mentors to interns.
- Collaborates with students and faculty members to effectively problem solve classroom issues with Sign Language Interpreters, CART Captioners, and TypeWell Transcribers.
- Provides awareness training and coaching to students and/or instructors on issues related to Deaf culture and communication access.
- Maintains contact with national organizations and other post-secondary institutions to keep abreast of current issues and changes in the field of interpreting and transcribing services. Implements best practices and maintains a high quality of interpreting and transcribing services.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is performed in an office or classroom/lab environment.?Work may involve sitting at a computer for extended periods. Additional hours may be required beyond the normal work schedule.
This position requires the ability to move from office to classroom settings in inclement weather. Interpreting and transcribing requires prolonged periods of standing or sitting and repetitive motion and mental processing are required.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) from an accredited College or University; advanced college degree in related field preferred. Advanced interpreter training required; certification preferred. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Demonstrated experience in a range of communication access tools, approaches, and systems (ASL, TypeWell, CART, Amplification, etc.) in a post-secondary educational setting. Demonstrated experience communicating with deaf individuals. Experience in coordinating personnel and/or arranging contracted services. Knowledge of TypeWell technology requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Forms of sign languages used by consumers as well as the unique needs of clients in an educational setting.
- American Sign Language and
- Knowledge of TypeWell and other speech-to-text accommodations.
- Knowledge of a variety of subject matter presented in college classes as well as an understanding of college culture and classroom expectations.
Skills in:
- Using a variety of sign language styles.
- Direct service provision; skill to present information and ensure equal participation for clients in educational settings.
- Operating a computer and various software packages including use of shared record management system.
- Technical troubleshooting to support transcribers.
Ability to:
- Work with people of diverse age groups and social, cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Create a culture of collaboration focused on professional development.
- Accommodate a variety of sign language styles to allow equal participation for the client.
