Job Summary

Responsible for administering and maintaining the enterprise database environment. Provides technical design, development, and maintenance of the database and associated master files. Ensures the accessibility, availability, security and integrity of the enterprise database infrastructure to maintain effective operation, ensures optimum performance of the database for the maximum number of users. Administers centralized technical support and leads in problem resolution.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Installs, maintains, and coordinates support for the enterprise Oracle databases and related application software and system support tools. Ensures the environment is kept up to date with upgrades and patches, and works closely with application and systems administrators to ensure the Oracle environment is configured to provide optimal support to the applications.? Provides guidance and direction, and serves as a technical advisor to technical support and other staff.
  2. Designs, implements, maintains and performs periodic re-evaluation of enterprise database infrastructure and applications management policies, standards and procedures. Analyzes data storage, usage and growth patterns in order to plan and execute tasks to ensure future database needs will be met.

  5. Plans, designs, implements, maintains, and performs periodic reevaluation of?procedures related to database recovery, restart and repair, data integrity and data security.
  6. Performs problem analysis and troubleshooting of the enterprise database infrastructure. As such, leads problem-solving efforts often involving other technical staff, multiple outside vendors, other departments and/or organizations.
  7. Coordinates efforts with system development staff, system administrators, network infrastructure personnel, client support, and the ITS helpdesk in providing problem resolution, consultation on and coordination of business and system process improvements and enhancements.
  8. Coordinates activities with vendors, such as Oracle, SCT and Hewlett-Packard for support and problem resolution, management of contractual obligations, research of potential solutions, and planning and implementing new solutions and improvements to existing Oracle infrastructure.
  9. Tracks and tests new technology and new techniques.?Establishes procedures to support research and development activities to determine the suitability of new technology and procedures to the PCC infrastructure.

  11. Maintains current knowledge of technological developments associated with the enterprise database infrastructure and associated applications by attending conferences and workshops and reading appropriate publications.
  12. Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems or related discipline. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Two to four years of mainframe relational database experience to include programming and database administration. Must have experience in information systems design, principles and techniques; familiarity with UNIX-based computers and networks.

Knowledge of:

RDBMS system generation/installation/maintenance procedures, backup and recovery and testing procedures; Oracle and UNIX utilities and tools, logical data analysis and modeling; physical database design, programming and implementation; problem diagnostic, analysis and resolution techniques; performance and tuning methodologies.

Ability to:

Communicate technical concepts and ideas to individuals and large groups; influence others toward a stated objective; interpret, evaluate, recognize and define problems; provide resolution through analytical constructive thinking; establish cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Requires the need to be continually aware of changing events, situations and technologies and to upgrade skills accordingly. Interruptions and distractions, plus the need to shift attention occur on a regular basis. Position incumbent works non-traditional hours as needed, and works from home and on-call when required. Incumbent works primarily in a computer environment amid noise, some dust and regular exposure to video screen, electrical and electronic equipment. Learned physical skill required for keyboarding and use of diagnostic equipment. Limited physical demand.
