Nature and Scope of Work
Under the general direction of library management, provides a wide range of technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of library systems and equipment. Leads and provides coordination of day-to-day operations of library services at the campus level or functions as the technical expert in the operation of the library’s on-line system. This work may be performed in an environment in which technical supervision is not available making the incumbent the primary source for technical information. Interpersonal contacts include peers in other work groups, students, faculty and staff at PCC and other agencies,vendors and the public.
Incumbent works under minimal supervision. Responsible for training and guiding others and/or reviewing their work.
Principal Accountabilities (includes some or all of the following)
- Provides information to students and other library users and assists with gathering research information.
- Investigates and resolves problems and complaints related to departmental policies and procedures; Provides assistance and information to library staff regarding materials and techniques available for their use; Leads problem solving efforts and provides assistance to other staff when required.
- Trains and directs the work of student and casual workers; Provides input on employee evaluations; Ensures that student employment paperwork, such as I-9s and timesheets are completed and accurate.
- Produces written materials such as department newsletter, brochures and instructions for library staff and student workers.
- Selects and orders materials in an assigned subject curriculum area and serves as the library contact to SACC chairs.
- Operates and instructs others in the use of the library’s online system, electronic and audiovisual equipment, student computers and associated software programs. Analyzes and develops solutions to system related problems and malfunctions of equipment; Details and reports problems to vendor and tracks resolution; Leads system related problem solving efforts and provides assistance to others when required.
- Serves as campus contact for library consortia such as PORTALS and ORBIS-Cascade Alliance (Pacific Northwest Region). Participates in committee work to ensure and enhance cooperative services.
- Verifies, reconciles and maintains an accurate accounting of monies received by the campus library for fines, lost materials, print cards, reimbursements and book sale receipts. Updates appropriate computer systems, i.e., Banner (the college management information system), the on-line library system and various cooperatively maintained spreadsheets to reflect account changes.
- Prepares statistical reports and/or narrative summaries for library management; Creates reports using the library’s online system to ensure accuracy of the catalog’s database and assist reference staff in collection assessment.
- Maintains a relevant archive of PCC publications.
- Identifies, verifies and processes detailed catalog holdings records using accepted library standards and procedures to maintain the integrity of the library’s database. Enters, updates, and monitors traditional and electronic reserve files.
- Ensures proper maintenance of facility, collection and equipment. Arranges and coordinates maintenance activities and monitors timely repair. Identifies and resolves potential safety issues.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in the library and is fast-paced with constant interruptions. Irregularities in the work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Incumbents may be required to drive between campuses to provide absence relief, requiring the use of a personal vehicle.
Physical Requirements
Learned physical skill is required to perform keyboarding. Lifting of 25 to 50 pounds and prolonged standing and walking may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma and two years of college-level course work with a concentration in library science, computer science or a related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for the college level course work.
Three years of experience operating library automated record systems or performing library operations is required. Requires knowledge of library reference tools, techniques, and electronic resources.
Must be detail-oriented, have excellent communication skills and the ability to direct the work of others.
