Truck Driver Lead

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Central Distribution Services management, drives light and medium duty trucks and other vehicles involved with the delivery of equipment, furnishings, supplies, and other materials for the District. Ensures compliance with transportation laws that regulate the handling of hazardous and other materials, weight restrictions limiting the amount of heavy materials, and time restrictions. Acts as lead worker for CDS drivers and assigns daily deliveries, responds to escalated transport issues, and coaches and mentors on safety, handling, and interpersonal issues. Ensures adherence to time schedules and safe job completion across the District. Assists with College vehicle usage records, procurement, and monitoring compliance with DEQ motor vehicle testing requirements.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serves as lead worker over CDS driving staff. Formulates and directs daily work assignments to ensure safe, timely, and efficient delivery and/or transfer of supplies, support materials, equipment, furnishings, and other items to all college campuses, centers, and outlying locations.
  2. Ensures smooth and efficient workflow. Provides guidance to drivers and other stakeholders in resolving delivery/transfer issues throughout the District in a timely manner. Escalates issues as appropriate.
  3. Performs daily pick up and deliveries to and from various college locations as well as other organizations in the State. Drives a variety of college vehicles in a variety of environments
  4. Loads and unloads cargo and uses material handling equipment. Acts as a point of contact and resource for CDS drivers with issues.
  5. Administers preventive maintenance program for CDS vehicles and material handling equipment; maintains and monitors service and utilizations records. Performs minor vehicle maintenance and arranges for other repairs as needed.
  6. Signs and maintains delivery documents. Monitors records of deliveries.
  7. Assists Fleet Manager with college vehicle usage records, procurement, and monitoring compliance with DEQ motor vehicle testing requirements.
  8. Monitors department driver staff and vehicle fleet operation. Recommends measures to improve safety, minimize risk, and promote best practices regarding use of equipment and avoiding hazards.
  9. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Follows safety procedures and uses proper lifting techniques to ensure personal health and safety as well as safety of others. Participates in on-going training in the safe handling of chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed with moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions, including outdoor work in weather extremes, undesirable cleaning or repair assignments, and moderately hazardous conditions.

Must be able to safely operate light and medium duty trucks in highly congested campus and urban environments. Position involves considerable physical exertion. Must have sufficient strength and ability to lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, move and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance. Everyday requirement to climb in and out of truck cab/cargo box and ascend/descend stairs while carrying objects. Must be able to safely use a variety of material handling equipment such as hand truck, pallet jack, furniture moving dolly, and carts. Must be able to operate a forklift to load and unload materials and deliveries from vehicles and move them to and from warehouse storage areas and loading docks.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of professional driving experience with light and medium duty trucks, class 2 through 6 (less than 26,001 lbs GVWR) or equivalent vehicles.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Oregon, and possess an acceptable driving record including five years of accident free driving, with no recent moving violations. Must acquire Forklift Operator certification within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Safe material and hazardous material handling;
  • Material data sheets;
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations;
  • Basic workplace health and safety procedures;
  • Vehicle power train, body, chassis, and electrical systems to administer preventive maintenance and service program.
Skills in:
  • Driving a truck in highly congested and structural areas;
  • Using a computer to perform basic operations;
  • Operating a forklift, pallet jack, moving dollies, hand trucks and other material handling equipment;
  • Organizing and keeping records;
  • Mechanical adaptability for solutions to maintenance problems.
