| 2-4pm | TCB 216 | Silent Battles Riding For Life: Veteran suicide awareness documentary and panel discussion | Screening and panel discussion of the documentary “Silent Battles Riding for Life,” produced in collaboration with PCC and the nonprofit Veterans Back 40, and showcased in collaboration with PCC Veterans Services. This 90-minute viewing and panel discussion would include participants in the documentary (who are also PCC staff), and be facilitated by PCC Veterans Services. We hope for an event space to house ~100 people, with multimedia access (to access and show parts of the documentary itself, which is on YouTube), as well as a table and 2-3 microphones for the panelists. A report from the National Academy of Science (NAS) committee on Equitable and Effective Undergraduate STEM teaching is being completed and prepared for public release in December. The presenter of this PCC community session is a member of the committee. The NAS report will present a framework and recommendations as outlined in the committee charge, which can be read on the website linked above. The phase I draft report framework is already proving to be useful as the basis for discussions about how to move from traditional STEM teaching to the use of methods that promote equitable opportunities for STEM learners. During this session, participants will learn more about seven principles of equitable and effective STEM teaching, and will engage in a discussion to strategize about dissemination of the NAS report in the hope that its content can help catalyze improvements in STEM higher education in Oregon. The goal is to improve our ability to meet our goals of equitable student success by getting this report out and read by instructors, administrators, funders, and other stakeholders in Oregon. |
