IPT Instructor Qualifications Prior to November 2016

Full-Time Faculty
  • Master’s Degree in Interpreting, Interpreter Education, Intercultural Relations, Deaf Education, Linguistics or related field AND
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (acceptable certifications: CSC, CI/CT or NIC) or certification from the ASLTA AND
  • Current membership in the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT) AND
  • Minimum of three years experience teaching interpreting or American Sign Language in credit courses at the college level AND
  • Native or near-native ASL proficiency.

Preferred: Experience coordinating an academic program, including working with part-time faculty and developing curriculum.

The FT Instructor will teach many of the different courses listed below and have significant, if not primary, responsibility for the curriculum, program equipment and facilities, connection to the Deaf community, the Advisory Board and other employers, as well as regular college departmental operations.

Qualification for Faculty with Specialized Teaching Assignments

Practicum courses such as ITP 180, 279, 281, 283, 284 and 285 require:

  1. AAS or BA in Sign Language Interpretation, Interpreter Education, Intercultural Relations, Deaf Education,? Linguistics or related field and
  2. RID Certification and
  3. 3 years professional interpreting experience, and background in mentoring new interpreters.

Other courses including language, theory and interpreting courses require:?

  1. AAS or BA in sign language interpretation, Interpreter Education, Intercultural Relations, Deaf Education,? Linguistics or related field and
  2. RID Certification or ASLTA Certification and
  3. 3 years professional interpreting experience ?and
  4. a minimum of 3 years experience teaching for-credit ASL classes or recent experience directly related to the content of the course to be taught, e.g. interpreting in K-12 education for ITP 261 and 275.
Related Instruction

Instructors who meet the above requirements are qualified to deliver all of the defined related instruction in this subject area.
