Summer ‘17

Members of the Internationalization Steering Committee met with Dr. Mark Mitsui, President,? and Dr. Katy Ho, VP-Academic Affairs, and discussed on global focus in the curriculum and utilizing global diversity at the college in providing learning?opportunities.

Fall ‘17

  • During the District In Service Subject Area Committee (SAC) Chairs meeting, Internationalization booklet on ‘How to internationalize your course’ was distributed to share with faculty.
  • Members of the Internationalization Steering Committee?met with Dr.?Katy?Ho,??VP-Academic Affairs, and discussed the committee’s work emphasizing on curriculum and infusing intercultural competence to diverse student population.
  • On October 19th 2017 a speed culturing session was held at the Sylvania PAC lobby between ESOL (Instructor: Luciana Diniz) and Dental Studies (Instructor: Dr. Magda D’Angelis-Morris) classes.

Winter ‘18

Internationalization Initiatives offered professional?development opportunities?to full-time and part-time faculty to attend a?conference or seminar?to explore:

  • Bringing more global awareness/perspective to students.
  • Learning how to infuse courses with international perspectives and assignments.
  • Knowing how intercultural competence be emphasized/infused in curriculum.

  • Carl?Wilkens?Co-Founder/Director, World Outside My Shoes visited INTL 201 (Introduction to International Studies) class at?South East on?Wednesday February 14th and discussed genocides of the 20th A trailer of the film I’m Not Leaving – Trailer
  • Korea Night?held in partnership with Rock Creek ASPCC on February 2nd 2018 at the Rock Creek campus Forum was filled with beautiful performances by the Oregon Korean Performing Arts and Korean food.
  • Internationalization Initiatives partnered with The Rock Creek Women’s Resource Center, International Students Office, International Students Club Council and ASPCC for a keynote speaker event on March 08th 2018 at the Rock Creek Event Center.? Maria Rita D’Orsogna, a Italian Physics Professor, shared her story about how she worked to stop oil companies from polluting and damaging the Italian coast, its’ marine life, and the coastal lands.
  • Jeffrey Dippman of Central Washington University presented on Dao and Zen: The Chinese Roots of Zen Buddhism on March 12th 2018 and on Qi’s Whiz: Daoist Cosmology on March 13th 2018 at Cascade campus. This event was made possible via the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, University of Oregon.

Spring ‘18

  • Reyna Grande, author of “The Distance Between Us” gave a lecture at Sylvania campus on April 24th Reyna was abandoned when she was very young because her parents wanted to try a better life in the US. She later joined them in the US (undocumented), and after a lot of suffering and persistence, she ends up being the first one in her family to get a college degree.   • West?African musician Okaidja gave a concert on April 24th 2018 as part of the Rock Creek Music Series and also held a workshop for students on April 26th

  • Zahia?Alqarra, a?Mental Health Specialist from the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, Palestinian Authority, spoke on the psychological and physical impact of war on the population, including children who have lost limbs and are rebuilding their lives day by day. This event was held on May 07th 2018 at the Rock Creek Women’s Resource Center.
  • Dr. Fanbin Zeng from the College of Journalism and Mass Communication of Jinan University, China and with University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Communication Arts as a Fulbright Scholar visited PCC on May 23rd and 24th 2018. Dr. Zeng’s four lectures on ‘Social Media in China’ ?were at

    • 2:50-3:50 p.m., Wednesday, May 23 — The Forum, Building 3, Rock Creek Campus.
    • 9-10 a.m., Thursday, May 24 — Performing Arts Center Lobby, Sylvania Campus.
    • 11:40 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., Thursday, May 24 — Room 112, Terrell Hall, Cascade Campus.Students and faculty from Business, Communication Studies, ESOL, International Studies, Political Science, History and World Languages attended the lectures.

  • The Asian/Chinese/Global Studies Awards ceremony was held on May 24th, 2018 at Terrell Hall auditorium at the Cascade campus. 17 students received Global Studies Focus Award. ?News Article on the award ceremony.

  • International Festival: Celebration of Nations was held on May 30th 2018 at ASPCC Rock Creek campus to celebrate diversity via educational activities, playing?cultural?games and trivia, art competition and students and faculty presenting on global diversity.
