PCC to Offer "Summer Sampler" to High School Students
Photos and story by Mark Evertz
This August, Portland Community College has invited high school students to "try before they buy" the college’s two-year career training programs. PCC has set up a unique career exploration opportunity where students can come to the campus, learn about different jobs, experience hands-on activities and visit business sites. No previous skills are required.
The one-week sessions will be held Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., during the month of August, beginning Aug. 4, Aug. 11, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25.
Students will be able to choose from a variety of career training programs with sessions that range from medical lab technology to aviation maintenance, from microelectronics to automotive service.
At the end of May, the college sent sign-up forms to Portland-area high school counselors to share with students who might want to explore career training programs at PCC.
"We’re hoping to get the word out to kids who may have missed the announcement at school," said Neal Naigus, PCC community relations manager.
The one-week sessions run $65 each. A student can take one session or all four. Scholarships may be available to students at their high schools. The Tigard-Tualatin School District, for example, is offering scholarships to eligible students.
If students did not receive a flyer at school and want to learn more about the Summer Sampler, they can call Neal Naigus at 977-4122 and register as late as June 20.
