Photos and story by Mark Evertz
Join the Portland Community College community, past Project Independence participants and the public in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Project Independence, the single parent/displaced homemaker program located on PCC’s Cascade Campus.
Where: The celebration will occur in the dining room of the Student Center Building on Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth, Portland.
When: Thursday evening, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
Who: Keynote speaker will be Okianer Dark, an assistant U.S. attorney for the district of Oregon.
Details: Project Independence serves women who are transitioning to school or the workplace. The program has assisted 750 people with personal development and career planning during the last 10 years. Students can also earn 10 college credits for completing the tuition-free program.
Project Independence has coordinated its efforts with a number of agencies, including Adults and Family Services, the Private Industry Council, the Housing Authority of Portland, the Family Self-Sufficiency Program and Parent Child Services.
"The fact that Project Independence continues to serve women after 10 years is an incredible milestone," said Linda Palmer, community resource specialist for the program. "The immediate challenge for program providers is to find a permanent source of funding as federal support dwindles."
