Ross Re-Elected to Math Post
Photos and story by Mark Evertz
Ilga Ross, a Sylvania Campus math instructor at Portland Community College for 13 years, won re-election to the post of Northwest vice president of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). This will be her second two-year term in the post.
"Serving in an office like this gives us an opportunity to broaden our contacts nationally and in the region," said Ross. "Math faculty all over the country are doing innovative things in terms of teaching. It’s important for us to communicate to share our successes."
The Tualatin resident is also coordinator of the five-year $1.7 million Title III grant project at PCC, which allows math teachers to see first-hand how math is used at local workplaces. She earned her master’s degree in math education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
AMATYC is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a national forum for the improvement of the instruction of mathematics in the first two years of college. They make recommendations and publish position papers on topics such as faculty qualifications, testing and assessment standards and the appropriate use of technology.
AMATYC has approximately 2,800 individual members and over 100 institutional members in the United States and Canada.
