PCC Welcomes New Director of Plant Services

Photos and story by

After nearly 20 years of employment as a director of maintenance for the paper manufacturer Ft. James Corp. (Crown Zellerbach Corp., when he started), Randy McEwen left the company’s Alabama mill for the greener pastures of Portland Community College.

McEwen, the new director of Physical Plant at PCC, will now bring his expertise in the fields of engineering and building maintenance to the college. McEwen’s duties include maintaining and improving PCC facilities, buildings and grounds. He replaces former director Betty Kay, who worked for PCC for more than 20 years before retiring in December.

A graduate of Stanford in 1970 with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering,

McEwen spent eight years in the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer following college. As an officer, he also taught engineering to ROTC students at the University of Colorado.

"The physical plant, custodial and maintenance staffs at PCC are just extraordinary," McEwen said recently. "Their commitment to the success of the college is something I see daily. The level of pride is very high."

McEwen and his family make their home in Longview, Wash.
