PCC Slates Walks Around City

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pearl District, Old Town and the Eastbank Riverfront Park will be explored during a non-credit Portland Walk Abouts series sponsored this summer by Portland Community College.The four-part guided tour series begins Saturday, June 30 with A Walk in the Pearl. Participants will learn the history of vintage warehouses in Portland’s thriving Pearl District, now home to galleries, lofts, restaurants and specialty shops. The three-hour walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at the U.S. Customs House at Eighth Avenue and Davis Street. Tuition is $20.Two sessions in the series will take place along the Eastbank Riverfront Park in downtown Portland. Identical walks will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, and Saturday, Aug. 4. Participants will meet at the Japanese American Historical Plaza at S.W. Couch Street and Naito Parkway. The route will cross the Steel Bridge onto the new floating walkway, where walkers will explore a riparian gallery, sound wall, river overlooks, a cantilevered walkway, and sea wall. Walkers will return to Waterfront Park via the Hawthorne Bridge. Tuition for each session is $20. Lunch will be optional.A tour of Old Town and Chinatown will conclude the series on Saturday, Aug. 25. Tour highlights include a visit to the new classical Chinese Garden and a walk across the new skybridge at Union Station. Participants will learn about shanghaiing through underground tunnels and the cast iron era. The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Japanese American Historical Plaza at S.W. Couch Street and Naito Parkway and concludes at 1 p.m. A dim sum lunch is optional. Tuition is $26.For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-614-7308.
