Irish Storyteller Explores Myth, Tradition of Holidays

PORTLAND, Ore. – From Halloween jack-o’-lanterns to Christmas stockings, Portland Community College can enhance your enjoyment of holiday traditions this year with two non-credit classes. Irish storyteller and historian Michael Whelan will uncover the rich origins of Halloween and Christmas through stories, music and art.Halloween will explore historic beliefs to modern American urban myths complete with comic and dramatic ghost stories. Learn about classical and folk music and art based on the holiday and share your own experiences. The one-day class will meet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Pine Room of the CC Building at PCC’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49thAve. Cost is $18.Christmas will feature an informal look at Christmas traditions from ancient to modern times through enchanting stories. Discover how Christmas is celebrated in other cultures and its growth in America from colonial times to present day.
