ROCK CREEK NEWS: Campus gets donation from artist Bill Rhoades
Photos and story by James Hill
Rock Creek has been the recipient of a major donation of artwork from noted Northwest art collector Bill Rhoades. In the past year Rhoades has given PCC Rock Creek Campus works by such Northwest artists as John Stahl, Manuel Izquierdo, Jeanne Moment, Aaron Johanson, Mark Tobey, Bill Hoppe, Madeleine Jovanovic, and Gan Martin among others.
Working closely with Mark Andres, art department chair, and Rock Creek gallery director Prudence Roberts, Rhoades has significantly augmented the holdings of original art on campus. Some pieces from the Rhoades collection have been installed in buildings 2, 3 and 9.
Other artwork, including some that had been waiting for siting and installation since the last bond purchase, and other artworks that have been relocated for more optimum presentation have also been installed in the same buildings. The new works will be used by Rock Creek art students for study, but are intended to be enjoyed by all.
Rock Creek faculty and staff experience international flavor
Rock Creek Campus President Katherine Persson, along with 13 other PCC staff from her campus and the college district, are participating in the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca in Mexico. The specific purpose of this initiative is to promote an international professional development opportunity in the area of international understanding through participation in a Spanish language and cultural immersion. This is the first year of this new initiative.
Also, the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communications (www.intercultural.org) offers three five-day workshops on over 40 intercultural topics annually. There are more than 28 participants from classified, AP, faculty and management participating in the 2007 summer workshops hosted by Reed College. Since the summer of 2004, more than 100 PCC staff have attended these funded workshops.
The Council on International Educational Exchange (www.ciee.org) is a new initiative that began in the summer of 2006. This summer, 17 PCC staff from the full-time faculty bargaining unit, part-time faculty with assignment rights and management will have the opportunity to attend overseas International Faculty 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网ment Seminars during the summer. This year, PCC participants selected seminars in Ghana, South Africa, India, Turkey, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, China, Cambodia and Vietnam. Returning faculty will then incorporate an international dimension into their existing courses. In addition, all participants (faculty and management) will collaborate to develop international grant proposals.
