It’s here – the Newberg Center, that is! After years of planning, discussion and community outreach efforts, Portland Community College’s newest and “greenest” center opened its doors to students this past September. And this month,?those doors will open to a wider audience.

The PCC Newberg Center is on path to becoming Net Zero.

PCC invites the community at large to celebrate the?grand opening of the PCC Newberg Center (135 Werth?Blvd., off 99W, near Brutscher St. and Fernwood Rd.) from 3-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, (the program begins at 4 p.m.)

  • Free admission.
  • Barbecue buffet.
  • Live music by Gil Reynolds and Deep Blue.
  • Fun activities for the whole family.
  • Demonstrations of the building’s sustainable features.

The Newberg Center is one of the first projects stemming from passage of the college’s $374 million bond measure in November 2008. Its location in Newberg – in the heart of fertile wine country that constitutes Oregon’s Chehalem Valley – was chosen by PCC’s Board of Directors because of the community’s ongoing population growth. Its launch coincides with the?year-long celebration of?the college’s 50th anniversary throughout the district.

“It’s interesting to see the ‘new’ and the ‘old’ coming together simultaneously . . .the birth of something so remarkable and special – like PCC Newberg – being celebrated at the same time we’re taking stock of the college’s 50 years of accomplishments throughout the Portland metro area,” said Linda Gerber, president of the college’s Sylvania Campus.

“We have –literally – built a solid foundation here, given all the care and precision that has gone into the planning of this facility and our integration in the community,” said Gerber. “With that as our springboard, I have no doubt that together we’ll achieve major milestones in the next 50 years, right here in Newberg.”
