Photos and story by

Portland Community College is hosting a lecture series, “Focus on China: Lectures on Culture and Change,” at its Cascade Campus on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21.

The series, which is free and open to the public, is set for Room 122, Terrell Hall, Cascade Campus (705 N. Killingsworth St.). The lectures introduce participants to Chinese philosophy and art, focusing on how each affects Chinese identities and their transformations over time. In addition to the public events, a core group of PCC faculty will use their experiences from the lectures to design courses and add modules to existing courses focused on China.

The public is invited to attend the following lectures:

Friday, April 20

2:30- 4:45 p.m. – Dr. Stanley Murashige (Associate Professor in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism, School of the Art Institute of Chicago) will lecture on the tradition and change in Chinese art.

7:30-8:30 p.m. – Dr. Roger Ames (Professor of Philosophy at University of Hawai’I and editor of Philosophy East and China Review International) will explore Confucian China in a changing world order.

Saturday, April 21

9-11:45 a.m. – Ames will talk about Confucian role ethics and how it challenges the ideology of individualism.

This symposium is part of a three-year faculty and curriculum development initiative funded by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education and directed by the Asian Studies 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网ment Program. The grant activities include schools across the country, including PCC, Johnson County Community College in Kansas, Middlesex Community College in Massachusetts, Missouri State University and the University of Texas, El Paso. The goal is to develop undergraduate Chinese language and culture curricula, including adding modules on China to other courses.
